According to Dr. John McLaughlin, the physicians at VIVA are able to play a key role in medical care beyond traditional radiology.
“We don’t just diagnose, we intervene,” Dr. McLaughlin said. “We do a variety of procedures—microsurgery using very small devices, using imagery guidance. Most procedures can be done outpatient, and they are a lot less invasive and a lot more effective.”
Dr. McLaughlin was a diagnostic radiologist for 10 years.
“We all train as diagnostic radiologists first. I wanted more patient contact and involvement.”
Dr. McLaughlin grew up in buffalo, went to med school there, and worked there for ten years.
“After being there for a long time, it was time to take a move. I was interested in the DC metro, then saw this job at an interventional conference.
“I just loved the group—the character of the group was excellent. I would’ve moved anywhere to work this group.”
Dr. McLaughlin said the group is laser-focused on the patient.
“We will treat you as if you were a family member. We are clinically oriented, not academically oriented. We are care-focused, not trying to gather data.
“Our goals are to do the best possible for the patient. Being in a community hospital, we can more effectively do that.
“We have incredibly highly trained people, and the hospital in Fredericksburg is a real gem. Many hospitals don’t have the same caliber of training that this place does.
“It keeps getting better–they are drawn to this hospital–they quickly recognize this group is unique. The group functions well as a group—it’s a very cohesive group. That’s important.”
Dr. McLaughlin earned his medical degree in 1984 from the State University of New York, Buffalo School of Medicine.
He completed his residency training in diagnostic radiology at the University of Maryland in 1988.
For 10 years he was a general radiologist at hospitals in Buffalo. In 1999 he completed his fellowship training in interventional radiology at the University of South Florida.
He is board certified by the American College of Radiology and is a member of the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and the American College of Radiology.
At VIVA, Dr. McLaughlin performs all interventional vascular procedures with a focus on varicose vein treatments and uterine fibroid embolization.
In his spare time, he is very focused on yoga and teaches meditation and mindfulness in the Fredericksburg community.
